I (am lucky enough to?) work on Windows, OSX and Linux machines for the various aspects of my job. Although I haven't used it yet, I expect Metro to be more of a hindrance to me than a useful tool. As for being a power user or propeller head as you put, I don't think Windows can fill my needs at all, but is often something I'm forced to work on due to compatibility and support issues. The command line may be more powerful than the GUI equivalents, but after coming from a Linux or OSX background, it feels awfully featureless and frustrating to do simple tasks on, tasks that you could easily do in a better command line environment. That said, I applaud Microsoft's progress with the front end. Since Windows 7 especially, they seem to be more on the right track. Despite various parts (file operations, built in tools like compression, etc) still feeling bloated and slow, things do seem to be improving and it's certainly not as bad to work on as it has been in the past.

Although I don't think I'll use it (especially in a work environment,) it would be contradictory of me to say Metro couldn't be a successful feature; I'm a big fan of the iOS home screens, that simple layout, which I guess is a similar kind of approach to Metro, and dare I say it, Windows is, in a lot of respects, a more "tidy" GUI than most Linux distros I use, such as Ubuntu. But that said, are people likely to use it as opposed to the standard desktop? I guess it remains to be seen, but in general users tend to stick to what they know -- something that can be brutally frustrating to watch as a power user. All in all, though, it's good to see Microsoft trying new things. Now, if they decided to use Unix for the kernel layer... :P

I've not read the T's&C's fully, but I suspect there will be some rules against that. Plus I wouldn't want the responsibility of having to deal with line failures, and lost power etc.

Hi Carl,

Thanks for stopping by. I don't think it is city-wide but there are number of locations where they do supply it:

You posted the article in 2009. Does Hull now have city centre wide wifi?

We maybe interested in providing such a system.

Regards

Carl Wakefield

Not certain everyone is getting the same equipment as I think they are trialling different routers and optical network units. Worst case you can at least get your own wireless router that would definitely be dual band.
